AMADOR CENTRAL

For many years the Amador Central served its short line
customers from Ione, at the Southern Pacific interchange
yard, to Martel, California. At first they ran steam
like the #5 shown here (former SP #2040). Later they
went to using Baldwin S-12 diesels.

SOUTH PACIFIC COAST

SPCBC001

By Andrews of Santa Cruz

It is a typical 1895 afternoon in the little mountain town
of Boulder Creek, California. South Pacific Coast 4-4-0 #6
and its two-car train is about to leave for Brookdale, Ben
Lomond, Felton, Rincon and Santa Cruz. But first, all must
have their photo taken for posterity! In the locomotive cab,
engineer Bill Dow. Station agent Joseph Aram, below the
tender, rests the Wells Fargo & Co. box against his foot.
Baggageman Brick Roy stands in the doorway of the combine.
Conductor Daisy Hollenbeck leans against the depot platform.
"Once upon a time in the West!"

SP4437

This 1946 photograph depicts a high speed, southbound,
Southern Pacific "Daylight Limited" charging the main
through the Pajaro Valley at 79 miles per hour! The white,
low, laid back, exhaust of the #4437 tells the viewer it was
a cold, crisp morning and a very fast train.

SP7963

Because of former Southern Pacific trackage from
Stockton to Merced via Oakdale, Southern Pacific (as of
April 1995) still had about a mile of track at Oakdale,
cut off from their system, with several large customers
on it. To get to that track and to interchange with the
Sierra Railroad, they first had to come in over Santa Fe
and the Sierra to switch that Oakdale track. Shown here,
SP40-2 #7963 is about to back up to make the connection
in the Sierra Yard and to sort some of its own cars. This
was the biggest type engine ever to run on the Sierra.
Track to far right is Santa Fe. Everything else is Sierra.
Track to far left at switch goes to SP track.

VIRGINIA & TRUCKEE

Though the Virginia & Truckee stopped operating in 1938 to
Virginia City, Nevada, and altogether in 1950, the legacy
of the railroad continues. Here #29 with some left over cars
once again operates on about two miles of relayed railroad
from Gold Hill to Virginia City in the early 1990's.
Someday, perhaps, it will again reach Carson City.

YOSEMITE VALLEY

YVMIXED2

There was only one Yosemite Valley Railroad that brought the
early tourist to El Portal, the gateway to Yosemite! Though
no less than four were planned, the YV, as it was called,
made it happen. Destined to be a Californa short line, the
YV catered to tourists. On this particular September 4, 1944
Fred Stoes and others, on a railfan special, got the "Mixed"
crew to stop for this stunning remembrance of the past on
the Bagby Bridge.

YV22A

CI: Yosemite Valley 4-4-0, #22 poses in the late afternoon
sun in the yards at Merced. Though lifeless, as the
railroad has been closed for over a month, the little
beauty looks ever ready to take on the train of memories
over the scenic California line once known as the "YV!"
September 23, 1945.
--------------------

YV28CREW

Fred Stoes, himself a fireman for the Southern Pacific, felt
a certain kinship with the crew of the last Yosemite Valley
mixed train, August 24, 1945. So it was on this final day
when the entire crew posed with engine #28 for one last shot
that Fred was on hand. A short time after this picture was
taken the Yosemite Valley was no more.

On hand besides Fred was Gerald Best, a man who knew
California railroads well and wrote much about them in later
years. He captured a slightly different view which did not
include the young man on the right. His notes indicate left
to right: Bob Jirsa, Henry Loggins, Guy Clements and
Jack Shoup.

navigable water. The Minto operated as far south as the
town of Northport in Washington state. It was launched
on Nov.18th, 1898. It was 161.7 feet long and weighed
828.9 tons. Twenty additional state rooms were added in
1910. It was retired from service in April 1954.

RESACA

CI: The stern-wheeler "RESACA." As there are no signs of
automobiles, we susspect the view is pre-1900. We wish
we knew more as the view is stunning. Perhaps someone
out there may have more information. All we know for
certain is that the word "resaca" is Spanish for a small
water inlet. Likewise, there was the famous civil war
battle at Resaca, Gordon County, Georga. Likewise, there
was the famous Texas battle of Independence known as
"Resaca de la Palma"
