WINCHESTER & WESTERN RAILROAD COMPANY (WW)
===============================================

Historical Snapshot: * Incorporated on August 16, 1916 to build from Winchester, Virginia into the western woods for lumber traffic and beyond. The railroad did get as far southwest as Wardenville (40-miles), VA but when the lumber ran out in the 1930's the line was cut back to Gore, VA. The road was originally a wholey owned subsidiary of the Baltimore & Ohio. * May 25, 1921 - Line opened from Winchester VA to Wardenville, WV, 40-miles for freight and two-time a day railbus passenger service. * 1926 - The company has two steam locomotives, 2- motorbus cars #10 and #11, two rack cars, two flat cars and four box cars. * Because of the Depression years and the line being in receivership, the line was cut in 1934 to Capon Springs and 1944 to Gore. It continues to operate over that 18-mile line to this day. * In the 1980's the W&WRR purchased the old 36-mile Cumberland Valley Railroad (from Conrail) between Winchester, VA and Hagerstown, Maryland. This significantly helped their operations and gave them access to Norfolk Southern in addition to CSX. * "In 1986, the W&W purchased the Winslow Industrial Track from Norma to Bridgeton, the Mauricetown Branch from Bridgeton to Mauricetown, the Bridgeton Secondary Track at Bridgeton, and the the Millville Secondary Track from Millville to the end of the line at Leesburg. In January 1987, the W&W took over operation on the Deerfield Branch from the Jersey Southern Railroad (now defunct)."...New Jersey DOT With acquired trackage rights granted by Conrail the W&WRR had a through connection over its entire four state length. * 2008 - The Winchester & Western Railroad, owned by the aggregate company Unimin with quarries in Gore and New Jersey, does a significant short line business in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey.
