VERMILLION SUGAR COMPANY
===================--===========
Historical Snapshot: Vermillion Sugar Company For many years in the Louisiana Sugar growing lands in Vermillion Parrish there were two major Sugar refineries making sugar out of cane. One was the Erath Sugar Company at Erath who worked 1,400 acres of land they controlled. The other, the Vermillion Sugar Companny at Abbieville. Louisiana, processed cane sugar furnished by several hundred other local growers, Both companies began about 1909. They both used former steam locomotives purchased from the Southern Pacific (T&NO). Earth engines included 4-4-0 #216 (now at Steamtown) and 4-6-0 #319. The Vermillion Sugar Company's steam operation consisted of moving burgeoning cane around the Abbieville Mill and switching the yard, Also, the locomotives took loaded cars out, and the empty cars back from the connection with the Iberia & Vermillion Railroad Company, later Texas & New Orleans. The two comapnies must have been affiliated as locomotives and equipment moved freely back and forth between the two mills.
