Photo, Sou Pac GP40-2 #7963 on Sierra RR. Order No. SP7963P Photographer: Rick Hamman Because of former Southern Pacific trackage from Stockton to Merced via Oakdale, Southern Pacific (as of April 1995) still had about a mile of track at Oakdale, cut off from their system, with several large customers on it. To get to that track and to interchange with Sierra Railroad, they first had to come in over Santa Fe and the Sierra to switch that Oakdale track. Shown here, SP40-2 #7963 is about to back up to make the connection in the Sierra Yard and to sort some of its own cars. This was the biggest type engine ever to run on the Sierra. Track to far right is Santa Fe. Everything else is Sierra. Track to far left at switch goes to SP track.
