Southern Pacific #4347 is seen on the headend of local San
Francisco Penninsula train #151. Take note that the third
car back is a "Daylight Limited" coach. The Daylight would
drop off this coach from the end of its train when it came
through San Jose, California. Because the Daylight made
very few stops on the Peninsula, the car was put on local
train #151 which followed immediately afterward and stopped
everywhere.

Southern Pacific Mountain locomotive #4355 is seen
taking on water at Watsonvile Junction (Pajaro),
California. Powerful and majestic, its black surface
highlighted by the bight colors of a setting sun on
the horizon, This mammoth 4-8-2 waits for yet another
stretch of its high speed legs on the way to San Francisco.
The year is 1935 and this fleet-footed pacer commands the
point of the pre-streamlined "Daylight Limited." While
not to be as famous as its younger offspring in just a few
years, even now Train #99 had a certain reputation to live
up to. Thus, it was not hard for the railroadmen on the
Coast Division to understand why the new red, orange,
yellow and black streamliners would also be called
"Daylight Limited's!"

Southern Pacific Coast Division train #72, pulled by
Company built 4-8-2, #4356, is seen bound for Los Angeles
at Logan, California, 1948. Trains #71 westbound and #72
eastbound, were SP's Daily coach train. Unlike the nine
and three-quarter hour Daylight Limited schedule between
San Francisco and Los Angeles, This 16-hour daily coach
train stopped at every single station point (some of them
flagstops) on the Coast Division.

Sometime during the war years, note headlight shroud, a
Southern Pacific 4300 series 4-8-2 locomotive showed up
in the Watsonville Junction pool. Unusual, photographer,
and fireman, Fred Stoes spotted this engine in the best
place to take advantage of the excellent morning light.
However, he forgot one thing: It was still cold! When
He ran the locomotive to the spot and warmed it up a
little, The hot exhaust condensed to white steam and
partially hid the #4371 under a cloud. Note the darkness
over the top of the locomotive, a hint of the exhaust and
the shadow of the cloud on the fuel tank to the right.
