Image, RARE SP 2-8-8-2 #4001 1st order, 1909 Order No. SP4001I Original photograph from the Daniel McKellips Collection While not an outstanding image, it is certainly a rare one. Sitting on the side of a hill somewhere along the Central Pacific Transcontinental route between Sacramento and Donner Summit, Southern Pacific 2-8-8-2 #4001 poses with crew in this 1909 view. This and #4000 were the first "Big Engines" to arrive on the property. While they proved to be power houses, they did not last very long because of breathing problems by the crews in long tunnels. Susequently they were transfered to a no-tunnel division and all future engines for "The Hill" (256 in all) arrived as Cab-forwards. Even these two were converted in 1928. Photo, Southern Pacific #4208/freight, 1939 Order No. SP4208P Photographer: Fred C. Stoes Southern Pacific cab-forward, 4-6-6-2 #4208 is seen on freight #408 at the highway bridge in Niles Canyon, California, 1937. Seemingly out of sequence, engines 4200 through 4211 were originally designated as such. When the large block of new 4-8-8-2 4200 series came along the earlier numbers were vacated in 1938 and the 4-6-6-2's became #3900 through #3911. Ironically, Fred Stoes captured this view shortly before renumbering. Shopping Cart 7" by 11", Price - $ 6.75 [Add To Cart] -------------------
