At this particular point (1935 - 1940) he was using a
5" X 7" camera because he felt the subject matter was so
large. Thus, the rresultant 5" X 7" negatives are so
large that they go beyond our 5 1/4" by 5 1/4" negative
carrier. Thus, while the views are stunning, we can not
produce them except with a digital print made from the
original 5" X 7" print.

An eastbound 2-10-2 with freight is seen approaching Elkhorn
Slough. The fact that the photographer was a local fireman,
and that he knew the crew on this train, probably explains
why there is suddenly a burst of black smoke where there was
none before. You don't suppose the engineer leaning out of
the cab yelled "High Fred" as they rolled by.
