Stoes The early morning westbound Southern Pacific "Del Monte" is seen pounding out the main at the top end of the Watsonville Junction Yard. 4-6-2 #2454 has the honors on the point. For those who remember the old train numbers, the crew must have made a mistake coming out of Monterey on this day. #75 would have actually been the westbound Lark. The Del Monte was really #77. It still would have been almost dark when the Lark came through. Further, the Lark had a much bigger locomotive (usually a 4400 series) and larger consist. Likewise, it was streamlined by this time. Stoes It is 6:10pm in Los Altos, California. Commute train #132, pulled by Southern Pacific 4-6-2 #2476, has just arrived from San Francisco. This rare 1955 shot was taken on the Mayfield Cuttoff which used to extend from the Southern Pacific Peninsula route below Palo Alto (at Mayfield, later South Palo Alto), in an almost straight line southwest to Los Gatos. Built in the early 1900's, it provided a quicker route from San Francisco to Los Gatos and Santa Cruz by bypassing San Jose several miles to the south. By the time this photo was taken, however, the line from Los Gatos to Santa Cruz had been closed for 15 years and the remaining branch was an industrial and commute artery. Today the tracks are gone, the train service a memory, and the right-of-way is an automobile expressway.
