Locomotives, 1,619; freight cars, 44,228; passenger cars, 1,115. * January 1941: Directly operated lines, 6,578 miles; * January 1, 1948: Railroad Nationalized. * June 17, 1953: Dieselization was completed when last steam locomotive was operated. * January 1961: Directly operated lines, 6,266.7 main line track. * 1982: Norfolk & Western and the Southern Railway merge under the new name of Norfolk Southern Railway. Total directly operated lines, 14,400 miles.
