SIERRA & MOHAWK RAILWAY COMPANY
======================================

Historical Note: In 1885 the Sierra Valley & Mohawk Railroad incorporated to connect the Nevada - California - Oregon narrow gauge raliroad (WP - Plumas Junction) to the town of Quincy, California. After about 15 miles of construction it fell into forclosure and was sold in January 4, 1895 to the Sierra Valleys Railroad. Later that year operation started. The line built about eight miles further. It was probably the Financial Panic of 1907, and the worst rain ever recorded in California history which also made it fail. On June 11,1911 a new company was formed, the Sierra & Mohawk Railway, to take over the last attempt and continue on. It finally reached Davis Mill near Mohawk and stopped there,39.4 miles from the NCO. We suspect, almost 100 years later, that with the arrival of the Western Pacific in Quincy, there was no longer a reason to complete the narrow guage road. On January 1, 1915 the S & M RR was consolidated with the NCO and the Sierra & Mohawk Railway ceased to exist. It became the Sierra Branch. Shortly thereafter the NCO was purchased by the Western Pacific and the Sierra Branch was abandoned in 1918.
