SANDY RIVER & RANGELEY LAKES RAILROAD

Historical snapshot: * Incorporated June 30, 1908 as a two-foot narrow guage railroad. In the same year the company purchased the Phillips & Rangeley Railroad and the Madrid Railroad. * In 1911 the company acquired the Eustis Railroad. * December 31, 1916: The company reported they were operating 103.35 miles of narrow guage railroad. They were using 14 locomotives. They further reported they had paid its parent company (who owned 100 percent of the SR&RL stock), Maine Central, dividends for the last six years and were profitable during all of those years. * On July 1, 1923 road owner Maine Central filed for foreclosure. On July 6, 1923, SR&RL did likewise. From that time on the receivers operated the railroad. From 1925 through 1930 the company ran under deficit operation. * January 1931; Company reported operating 96.45 miles of main line and 12.62 miles of side tracks, spurs and yard track. They further reported having 11 locomotives, "cars" 321. * 1935: Railroad abandoned, "Sold for junk!"
