RUTLAND RAILROAD COMPANY (RUT)
==================================

Historical Snapshot: The Rutland Railroad had its early beginnings in Vermont back in 1843. It went thrugh many iterations including being leased for several years, pieces bought and sold, but always continuing. The company's primary business was the shipment of milk in Vermont. It did eventually reach into the State of New York and as far north to just over the International border into Quebec. The Rutland was never realy successful going through receivership several times. It was just long enough, about 400 miles at its best, to generate sufficient freight and pssenger business to survive, but, not long enough to thrive! After WWII passenger business fell of to nothing. Eventually changes in shipping technology and excessive competition put it out of business. On May 20, 1963 the I.C.C. approved the company's petition for abandonment. Today about 21 miles of the railroad is still in operation. The rest is long gone. Reference Note: * November of 1950: Rutland Railroad Company reorganized becoming Rutland Railway Company.
