OKLAHOMA CITY-ADA-ATOKA RAILWAY CO. INC.
==========================================

Historical Snapshot: The Muskogee (holding) Company became a parent to three railroad companies in the late 1920's. They were: The Kansas, Oklahoma & Gulf Railway Company, The Midland Valley Railroad Company, and the Oklahoma City-Ada-Atoka Railway. They were all loosely tied together and based out of Muskogee, Oklahoma. On October 1, 1923 The Oklahoma City-ADA-Atoka Railway Company was incorporated to purchase the 115.87-mile MKT branch line from Oklahoma City to Coalgate, not included in the MKT's own reorganizaton plan, but acquired at a receivers sale on September 28, 1923 by H.R. Hudson. Further, it acquired, through lease the 13.55-mile MKT branch line from Oklahome City to Atoka, Oklahoma. Reporting in 1926, the company had 13 coal burning locomotives, 53 freight cars, five cabooses, three coaches, two baggage cars, one combine car, and one business car. In April of 1929 the Muskogee Company acquired the controling majority of the company stock for all three previously mentioned railroads. By the end of the year all three companies,though separate, had signed consolidation agreements for joint operation of facilities, trackage and equipment. On September 23, 1930 the company also acquired the Oklahoma City - Shawnee Interurban Railway Company via stock exchange. (Ownership yes, but not included in Company milage), In 1936 the ICC authorized the abandonment of 14.5 miles of main line from Tupilo to Coalgate Oaklahoma. That portion especially had shown a deficit for several years. The 1938 Equipment Registrey listed the Oklahoma City-ADA- Atoka Railway as having no locomotives or equipment, only three maintenance cars. According to the 1941 Moody's Railroad Manual company operation had grown from 146 total track miles to 164 total track miles even though the mainline was shorter. By 1961 the railroad had run at an operational deficit of $10,00 to $20,000 a year,for many years. It is suggested that the reason the line was still in operation was because of the added freight revenue it generated for the longer hauling, connecting, other Muskogee railroads. Examples - Kansas, Oaklahoma & Gulf - 345 miles of main line. Midland Valley Railroad - 357 miles miles of main line.. In 1965 the Muskogee Company sold the Oklahoma City-ADA- Atoka Railway to Santa Fe, retaining the other two operations. On Dec 1, 1967 the company was merged into the Santa Fe Railway.
