Stoes One cold fall day in November of 1938 Fred Stoes wandered into Grass Valley to photograph what was left of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge. Sitting on what could have been taken for the rip track sat two narrow gauge 2-6-0 engines. The first was the NCNG #5, an active engine since 1900. The second was a recent arrival still lettered LTR&TC #1. Ironically, both shared a joint past. The #5 was originally the #1 the "Tahoe" and the #1 was originally the #2 the "Glenbrook." Both starting on the Lake Tahoe Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1875 and working side by side until 1898 when the line closed. Today, both still exist in various display forms over 125 years later! -------------------- NCNG 2-6-0 #2

Joslyn view we see Nevada County Narrow Gauge 4-4-0 #7 under steam at Colfax, California. Built in 1881 for the Carson & Colorado, its susequent owners were the Nevada-California RR where it was #4 and the Central Pacific (again #4), finally coming to the NCNG in 1929. It was scrapped in 1935 afer 54 years of continuous service! This image was nade from a copyprint of the original. -------------------- NCNG 2-8-0 #8

Image, Nevada County Narrow Gauge #8 on TT Order No. NCNG08I This view was lifted from a very old photograph. Though it has a negatve, it is beyond use. Thus, the computer does what the negative cannot. Produce a useable print. While several in the know have looked at the image, no one is quite sure where this shot of Nevada County Narrow Gauge 2-8-0 #8 on the turntable was taken. One thing is certain, welcome to those days when men could turn an engine by hand and 15-tons was considered a heavy load for a freightcar. -------------------- NCNG 2-8-0 #9

It is the end of another long day as the shadows close in on everything this early 1937 evening. -------------------- NCNG - box #24

Image, Nevada County N.G. Motor Car #1, 1927 Order No. NCNG2MC1I Photograph by: David L. Joslyn As times got hard and passenger and express trafic fell prey to the motor vehicle, the Nevada County Narrow Gauge decided not to fight it, but rather join the new mode of transportation. Thus, shown here at Colfax, California in December of 1927 was passenger motor car No. 1 and its express trailer. The car was powered by a model "T" motor -------------------- NCNG - Boxcar #134

Photo, Nevada County NG Railfan Special, 1937 Order No. NCNGDPOTP Photograph by: Fred C. Stoes May 16, 1937, Colfax, California: This Nevada County Narrow Gauge picture speaks so eloquently of another time and place. People have come this day to ride the railroad, for the fun of it! Note the dress of the 1930's, the relaxed atmosphere, people enjoying themselves and each other. The equipment is old, the line suffers from lack of maintenance, and comfort is all but forgotten. But, so what! The caption on the back of the proof by Fred Stoes says it all: "The good old days of fan trips!"
