NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAILWAY (NS)

Historical Snapshot: * Norfolk-Southern came into being in 1982 when the Southern Railway and the Norfolk & Western, both long time solvent and profitable railroads, merged. On December 31, 1990 the final federal approval for the merger was recorded. The merged road became the Norfolk Southern Railway, a subsidiary of Norfolk Southern Corporation. Combined right-of-way totaled 14,400 miles of road. * August 22, 1998 - acquired 58-percent ownership of Conrail. That represented approximately 7,000 miles of long term leased road being all that property of the former Pennsylvania Railroad. CSX-Transportation acquired the other 42-percent bing all that property of the former New York Central. Both companies jointly own several hundred miles of Conrail switching operations. * 2008 - Operated 20,891 miles of road. Total track operated over 37,660 track miles. 3,948 owned and leased locomotives; 95,537 freight cars owned and leased.
