The NEW YORK, CHICAGO & St. LOUIS RR COMPANY
* * * * * "NICKEL PLATE ROAD" * * * * *
============================================
Snapshot History: * Incorporated in April of 1923 as a consolidation of of five other railroad companies and its former name sake New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad. * As of 1941 the company reported owning 1,704 miles of main line and 1,200 miles of support track. The company was operating with 203 locomotives, 96 passenger cars, and 11,590 freight cars. * Observation: The Nickle Plate had a complex corporate life in that it was a successful operator in a multi railroad served area. It, no doubt at one time, was a "plumb." The Chesapeake & Ohio controlled it for a short time. It had a interest in the Chesapeake & Ohio. It combined with several other lines to acquire adjoining railroads while all the time seeking approval from a very powerful I.C.C. It, like so many others populating a shrinking railroad freight business eventually succumbed to the Eastern Area Railroad Reality - Too many railroads, to few freight customers. * January 1, 1961: Company reported they have 2,170 miles of main line. They also operate over 1,845 miles of trackage rights track, second, third and fourth main line tracks; spur, siding and yard traks. Of the company's locomotive 411 were diesels. Also as of January 1 1961 The board of directors and stockholders have approved a merger with Norfolk & Western. It includes a currently held lease of the Wheeling & Lake Erie and several other smaller carriers. * October 16, 1964: The I.C.C. aproved the merger application of 1961.
