Historical Snapshot: * "The genesis of the system (New York Central) was the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad charted in 1826 and opened August 9, 1831. It was the first railroad built in the State of New York." Between then and the date of Incorporation, December 22, 1914, many mergers and acquisitions took place. There are many volumes written on it and its subsequent history. * As of December 31, 1960 the New York Central reported having 4,564 miles of main line, 1,183 miles of second track main line, 597 miles of "other", 694 miles of passing sidings, and 2,991 miles of yard, spur and maintenance track, The system total was put at 10,030 miles. * Became part of Penn-Central February 1, 1968. * Became part of Conrail 1976. * Became part of CXS Transportation August 21, 1998.
