Historical Notes: Modesto & Empire Traction * The Modesto & Empire Traction Company was incorporated on October 7, 1911 to provide operational services of the Modesto Interurban Railway which it had long term leased for $12,000 per year. * The Modesto Interurban Railway incorporated on April 6, 1909. It constructed a freight only railroad of 5.19 miles from Modesto to Empire, California. (Some evidence indicates the Modesto Interurban Ralway was a construction company with all stock owned by local Modesto residents.) * January, 1941: Company reported 5.19 miles of mainline and 4.26 miles of sidings. It connects to the A.T. & S.F. at Empire, California. Rail is 52 to 85 pound. * 1963 Modesto Interurban Railway "reorganized". * 1972 "No public interest". Stock controlled by Beard family. * Currently (2008) - Company operates several GE 44-ton diesel locomotives in a large interchange intermodal yard and the rest of the railroad survives. Company just ordered two new Gen-set diesel hybrid locomotives from Railpower Technologies.
