THE MONONGAHELA RAILWAY COMPANY
=====================================

Historical Snapshot: The Company, originally incorporated as the Monongahela Railroad on December 31, 1900, began a 69.38 mile short line service from Brownsville Junction in Pennsylvania to Fairmount West Virginia on August 31, 1903. In addition, the company owned and operated six short branchlines totaling about 13-miles. Likewise, it started out with leases and trackage rights over another 26 miles. On July 1, 1905, the company name was changed to the Monongahela Railway Company due to a small consolidation. As such, its primary business was that of a coal hauler, although it also operated passenger service until 1950. The company always operated as its own entity but was a subsidiary, in various combinations, of the companys with Which it connected. These included the Pennsylvania Railroad, the New York Central, the Baltimore & Ohio and the Pittsburg & Lake Erie. The Monongahela during its life did not go through the many economic problems that many similar sized companys experienced during the Panics of 1907 and 1917, and the Depression years. On May 1, 1993, after almost 90 years of continuous service it was merged into Conrail. The company was quite successful for a short line. So much so that 21-miles of its mainline was double tracked to handle the traffic.
