Snapshot History: Lehigh Valley Railroad Company * Incorporated - Under Pennsylvania law - April 21, 1846, as the Delaware, Lehigh, Schuykill & Susquehanna Railroad. Renamed January 7, 1853 to L.V.R.C. * Affiliates - July 1864, the Beaver Meadows R.R.-absorbed; August 1864, the Penn Haven & White Haven - acquired; May/ June 1868, The Hazelton R.R. and the Lehigh & Lucerne R.R.- acquired; 1871, Morris Canal & Banking Company - Leased; January 1917, The company controlled, being the majority stockholder, the Lehigh Valley R.R. of New Jersey; the Easton & Northern R.R.; the Schuykill & Lehigh Valley R.R.; The Delaware, Schuykill & Susquehanna R.R,; The Pennsylvnia & New York Canal & R.R.; the Loyalsock R.R.; The Montrose R.R.; The Lehigh Valley Railway (of New York); The Lehigh & New York R.R. and (controls byu long term lease) the State line & Sullivan R.R., and the Hayt's Corner, Ovid & Williard Railroad. In addition, the company held interests in several coal companys including the Lehigh Valley Coal Company of 1875. * Total Length of various segments as of June 39, 1916 - 1,443.81 miles; as of December 31, 1930 - 1,361.70 miles; The company's double-tracked main line extends from Jersey City and Perth Amboy, New Jersey to Buffalo, New York, via Phillips, N.J. and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. * Control: As of August of 1931 the Pennsylvania R.R. directly owned 31% of the company stock and indirectly owned 21% of the stock actually belonging to the Wabash Railway, who the Pennsylvania R.R. controlled. December 31,1949: Lehigh Valley Railway Co. of New Jersey, the Lehigh Valley Rail Road,and several snaller wholey owned subsidiaries were merged into the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company. In September of 1951 the company was completely dieselized. As of 1960 the company reported owning 223 diesel locomotives. The company reported as of January of 1961 owning 1,127 miles of main line in New York and Pennsylvania. In addition, they also operated over 946 miles of spurs, sidings and yard tracks. June 24, 1970. Because of the Penn-Central bankrupsty an imbalance of financies occured and the company immediately stopped receiving money from the P.C. but at the same time continued paying on depts to them. Thus, three days after the Penn-Central went into bankruptsy, the Lehigh Valley followed suit.
