LAKE SUPERIOR & ISHPEMING RAILROAD COMPANY (LSI)

Historical Snapshot: * Organized as the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railway in 1893 by its iron ore mining owners Cliffs Natural Resources Company thaul raw and finished material from the Marquette Iron Range to Presque Isle in Michigan for transhipment to lake steamer. It continues to do so as of 2009 for its same owners. * 1923 - the Company (then 33-miles in length) was merged with the Munsing, Marquette and Southeastern Railway. The new company changed its name to the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad. This increased the line to 173 main line miles. * During its hey day the company operated a group of 2-8-0, 2-8-2 and 2-10-2 steam locomotives. With the chang to diesel RS3's we purchased, then RSD12's and ex Santa Fe RSD15's. Today the company operates former Burlington Northern GE U30C 6-axle diesels. * 1949 - changed the "and" in name to "&". * Engineering Features: A 564 ft bridge, 104 feet high, over the Dead River, A ruling grade of 1.63 percent, and a cement pier almost a qurter mile long sticking out into Lake Erie at Marquette for iron ore pellet transfers. Fortunately the trans are loaded down grade and empty upgrade. * As of 2009 the line has shrunk to 25 operating miles which still sees daily trains from Eagle Mills to the the pier at Presque Isle (north of Marquette).
