Snapshot History: Grand Trunk Western Railway The Grand Trunk Western Railway, a subsidiary of the new Canadian National, came into being on May 9, 1928 when the assets of several Great Lakes Area railroads, waterway and car ferry companies, and acquired railway leases were consolidated into the one company. The Said company was approved by the Interstate Commerce Commission on November 8, 1929. At that time the GTW had a little over 1,000 miles of railroad. As of January of 1941 the company was operating over the same basic milage, had 276 locomotives, 115 passenger cars and 12,400 freight cars. In the company's Moody information of 1960 it reported having essentially the same size operation, mainline milage, locomotives, passenger cars and freight cars. During the time of its 43-year existance the U.S.based GTW continued to change, added and abandoned other companies, and merged with a few more. In December 0f 1971 it and two other United States based CN subsidiaries were "amalgamated" into a single new United States operations holding company, The Grand Trunk Corporation. Grand Trunk Corporation Evidentally, for legal reasons, the amalgamated companies continue to exist, more or less, and were used to acquire other United States based operations for parent Canadian National via their owner Grand Trunk Corporation. This statement is only partially true as there are exceptions. Suffice it to say, GT Corporation is a holder of several operating railroad companies and holding companies of operating railroads. In 2002, however, the FRA classified this non-operational entity as a single Class I U.S. Railroad. Grand Trunk Corporation continues to control almost all of CN's U.S. operations which include the Grand Trunk Western Railroad - GTW, Illinois Central Railroad - IC, Wisconsin Central Ltd. - WC, Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway - DWP and Great Lakes Transportation - GLT, which includes the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad - B&LE and the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway - DMIR. It also operates several smaller railroads and related companies including the Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad, Cedar River Railroad, Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Company and Wisconsin Chicago Link Limited. The Corporation is a non-operating holding company which continues to exist, along with all subsidiaries, on paper for legal reasons. The ICC officially clasifies the Grand Trunk Corporation as a Class I Railroad with CNA (Canadian National of America) as its letters. For our purposes here, the Leters "GTR" are used to differentiate the time period 1971-1999. Additional major acquisitions: Illinois Central Corp. (1999), Wisconsin Central Corp. (2001), Great Lakes Transportation (2004), and Elgin Joliet & Eastern RR (2008).
