FORT WORTH & DENVER RAILWAY
================================
Forth Worth & Denver City Originally incorporated in May of 1873, the Fort Worth & Denver City Railway began construction in 1881, hualting its line at Union Park, New Mexico Territory (528 miles) on March 14, 1888. There it met the Denver, Texas & Fort Worth building south from Pueblo Colorado. The last leg had been built from Pueblo to Denver Colorado by the Denver & New Orleans Railroad. Shortly after through service began April 1, 1888 the three lines went through much consolidation, takeover and bankruptsy. In 1899 the Colorado & Southern Railway picked up the pieces, as well as several other Colorado and Texas shortlines, placing it in a new subsidiary, The Fort Worth & Denver City Railway. In 1908 the Colorado & Southern became a Burlington Lines wholey owned subsidiary. Even so, it and the Fort Worth & Denver City continued to maintain their name for much of their ensueing history. in 1951 the word "City" was removed from the name and most of the other C&S Texas lines were included into the new Fort Worth & Denver Railway. It continued as such until merged in 1982 into the Burlington Northern. For a short time it controlled all Burlington properties, even the "Frisco" in Texas and was a direct subsidy of the parent company. Today much of it continues as BNSF. ** Although the Fort Worth & Denver City was its official name for many years most written paper- work, notes and manuscripts, along with earlier photograph descriptions, simply refer to it as The "Fort Worth & Denver".**
