DENVER & SALT LAKE RAILWAY COMPANY
======================================

Historical Notes: * Incorporated to build a railroad from Denver, Colorado west through the Rocky Mountains to Salt Lake City and beyond on July 18, 1902. Said company was the Denver, North-Western & Pacific Railway. Line completed over Corona Pass in September of 1904, crossing the Rocky Mountains at 11,660 Ft. By November of 1913 the railroad had been completed 232 miles to Craig, Colorado. * The railroad went through severe financial problems including insufficient funds to continue or complete. In 1912 David Moffat's road went belly up. On May 1, 1913, The reorganized Denver & Salt Lake Railroad picked up the pieces and continued. In 1917 The new Denver & Salt Lake Railroad again went into receivership. * On December 31, 1926 the company became the Denver & Salt Lake Railway. The first thing realized was that the route went too high in winter. Thus, a company was formed to put a 6.21 mile tunnel (Moffat Tunnel) in through the Rockies and lower the line by over 2,000 feet in elevation. Likewise.it made the resultant new route 31.76 miles shorter. The tunnel was opened on February 14, 1928. Shortly thereafter the Denver & Rio Grande Western began buying D&SL stock. By 1931 they controlled it. * In June of 1934 the Dotsero cutoff was completed between the Denver & Salt Lake at Dotsero and the original Denver & Rio Grande Western at Orestod. By using this cutoff it made the trip from Denver to Salt Lake 104 miles shorter. * After several years of trying the ICC finally allowed the merger of the Denver & Salt Lake Railway with the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad Company on April 10, 1947.
