DETROIT, TOLEDO & IRONTON RAILROAD COMPANY

"Early" Historical Snapshot: Note: In 1905, the Detroit Southern Railroad suffered a reorganization at which time the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railway ws created to became the new owner. Property included a 282-mile main line between Detroit, Michiogan and Ironton, Ohio, plus branches. On February 14, 1914, the company was again reorganied becoming the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton "Railroad" Company. On July 9, 1920, Henry Ford and "friends" purchased all the bonds and stock of the company and became its owners. In June of 1929, the Pennroad Corp. (Pennsylvania Railroad) purchased full control of the D. T. & I. from Henry Ford. This was done legally, but without the "approval" of the ICC. In 1931, the ICC, against commission recommendations for denial, authoried all but 1.12 miles of leased lines to be acquired. This included the Detroit & Ironton Railroad and the Toledo & Detroit Railroad, both of which were parts of D. T. & I. mainline. As of this period the D.T. & I. was operating 510 miles of owned and leased railroad. From this point on Detroit, Toledo and Ironton was a Pennsyvania Subsidiary. - - - - - * 464 miles in operation, owned and leased - 1961 * Sold to private parties in 1980 after failure of Penn-Central. Picked up by Grand Trunk Western and merged into it in 1981-1982.
