Historical Snapshot: * 1980 CSX - A Consolidation of the Chessie System, and the the Seaboard Coast Line Industries. * July 1, 1986, CSX Transportation - Rename and formal merger on paper aproved. * August 31, 1987 - formal iclusion of Chesapeake & Ohio/Baltimore & Ohio into CSXT * August 22, 1998 - CSXT acquired 42-percent ownership of Conrail and a long term lease of a wholey owned subsidiary being all that property of the former New York Central, R.F. & P. and some other smaller companies (3,800 road miles). A the same time Norfolk Southern acquired the other 58-percent ownership of Conrail. This included the long term lease of all that property of the former Pennsylvania Railroad. Both companies jointly own several hundred miles of Conrail switching operations. * 2008 CSX operates 21,000 miles of railroad in 23 states.
