Historical Snapshot: * Conrail was formerly incorporated on October 25, 1974 as the entity to operate and control those railroads as specified in the aproval of the 3R act. * April 1, 1976 - Gouvernment formed bailout consolidation of New York Central, Penn-Central and six others into one company begins operations under Conrail. * August 21, 1998: 42-percent, including former New York Central, went to CSX Transportation in the form of a long term lease and stock purchase from Conrail of a newly created subsidiary. Fifty-eight-percent, including the former Pennsylvania Railroad, went to Norfolk Southern in the form of a long term lease and stock purchased from Conrail of a newly created second subsidiary. Conrail continued as a participant and controller of the two subsidiaries. * 2008 - Conrail coninues "as a terminal and switching agent for its owners, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern, Conrail continues to provide safe and efficient rail service for many local rail freight customers in Detroit (359 track miles), New Jersey (471 track miles), and Philadelphia (372 track miles). Customers located along Conrail's lines in these shared asset areas have access to the nation's rail network through either NS or CSX."
