COLORADO & SOUTHERN RAILWAY
NARROW GUAGE - BURLINGTON LINES
=================================
Note: Chartered on December 19, 1898, the C&S was organized to take over several narrow and standard guage faultering lines because of economic conditions of the time. Most were primarily in Colorado. By 1908, when the C&S was purchased by James Hill/Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, it had extended into Oklahoma, New Mexico, Wyoming and Texas. Though controlled by the Burlington, it would continue to maintain its own corporate identitiy until 1981, well after the Burlington Northern Merger. There is some conjecture as to whether the Colorado & Southern ever operated a narrow guage, rather, it owned the controlling stock in said companies.

As to what actual narrow guage line it belonged, who knows. Suffice it to say the original photograph from which this image was made says on the back "Colorado & Southern narrow guage. The #537 was originally built for the D. C. in 1896 and was their #5. In 1901 it became B. & M. R. #496. in 1914 it was changed to #537.Shopping Cart
