Snapshot History: Chicago & Illinois Western Railroad The C&IW was a connecting switcher short line that serviced Harvester, Hawthorne and Gary areas of Chicago. It was controlled by various Chicago carriers from 1914 to 1951. Eventually it was merged into the Illinois Central and then Canadian Mational.
