CHICAGO INDIANAPOLIS & LOUISVILLE "MONON"
===========================================
Snapshot History: Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railway Company The Company was incorporated on March 31, 1897 to take over the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Railway, which it had acquired during forclosure proceedings. The new company's main line was 508.79 miles in length as follows: New Albany to Michigan City, 288.86 miles; Indianapolis to near Chicago and branch to Cincinnati, 219..94 miles. In addition, C.I.& L., through trackage rights and leases, operated over another 104.40 miles of controlled railroads. They included the Indiana Stone Raiulroad and the Indianapolis & Louisville Railway, Finally, they had a 999 year lease to use the tracks of the Chicago & Western Indiana Railway. The line soon became known as the Monon because its two primary branches crossed each other at Monon Creek, now Monon Indiana. In 1902 the Louisville & Nashville and the Southern Railway acquired joint controling interest of the C.I.& L. through stock and bond purchases. It coniutnued, however, to operate as a separate entity. This control allowed direct access into Nashville, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Michigan City. In March of 1914, the company acquired the Chicago & Wabash Valley Railway. In September of 1916, the C.I.& L. purchased the Indiana Stone Railroad (9.92 miles), and the Indianapolis and louisville railway (59.7 miles). Also, they acquired a third interest in the Kentucky, and Indiana Terminal Company. On Decenber 30, 1933, The C.I.& L. filed for Sec. 77 Bankruptsy. Because of the size of the railroad (647 miles total), its importance to the Cities of Chicago, Indianapolis and many opthers, and the number of railroads directly or indirectly involved, it was a very complex bankruptsy. The C.I. & L. continued to operate under receivership for the next 13 years, It was not until May 1, 1946, when the ICC finally approved a reorganization plan under the management of the new Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railway Company. In 1956 after several acquisitions and mergers the parent company officially renamed the C.I.& L as the Monon Railroad. It was merged into the Louisville & Nashville on August 8, 1971. Subsequently the L. & N. became part of the Seaboard, which became part of CSX.
