BELT RAILWAY COMPANY OF CHICAGO (BROC)

Reference Note: The Belt Railway was closely related with the Chicago & Western Indiana through partial ownership, trackage rights, and long term leases of right-of- way, motive power and rollingstock. See Chicago & Western Indiana file for related history. It incorporated on November 22, 1882. It's 99-year lease with CW&I began March 31, 1883. It did significant business hauling coak in it own fleet of well over 100 gondolas. The company primarily operated over the C&WI 21.54 mile Belt Division, and had trackage rights over sevral other lines in Chicago for over 50 more miles of operations. Today the Belt Railway of Chicago continues, connecting to all the major companies entering and leaving the area. It is currently owned by six railroads and is the largest such switcing and intermediate operation in the United States.
