BARRE & CHELSEA RAILROAD CO.(B&CRR)

Historical Snapshot: The 13.2 mile Barre & Chelsea Railroad was incorporated on Aprl 9, 1888 to build from Ayer St. in Barre, Vermont up a five percent grade (in places) to the nearby granite quarries. On July 20, 1892 the company incorporated the 1.7 mile East Barre & Chelsea Railroad from Barre to East Barre to serve additional customers. On September 18, 1913 the two companies were consolidated into the Barre & Chelsea Railroad Company. As of 1927 the line reported being 15.52 miles of main line and 3.3 miles of spurs, sidings and yard track. They had four steam locomotives in operation, 273 freight cars, and passenger combine #14. From 1911 to 1944 the company was controlled by the Boston & Maine Railroad. In 1945 the faultering 38-mile MountPelier Railroad, which ran from Mountpelier to Wells River, was purchased by, and became part of, the Barre & Chelsea Railroad. The new larger company would run until 1956 when trucking competition and little passenger business put it out of business. The company was desolved October 18, 1957. During most of the company's later operation they ran two mixed trains a day, and one on Sunday, until its close. Freight consist included granite carrying flat cars and at least two milk cars daily. As of October of 1953 the company was runing its trains with a GE 70-ton diesel #14. In addition to the #11 below, the company ran a 2-8-0 steam locomotive #22 on typical longer freight days.

The #11 was originally built for the Boston & Maine as #932 in 1909 by Alco Manchester. It later became a G-10 class locomotive and was renumbered 275.
