Image, Amtrak P30 #724 on SP Commute train Order No. AT724I Photogaph by: Rick Hamman During the last days of the Harriman coaches on the Southern Pacific Peninsula commute service the SP suffered a motive power shortage. To solve the problem they leased a few Amtrak P30 diesels for a short term. The only problem was the Harriman coaches were steam heated and the P30's had no steam boiler. No problem! They simply hooked up the cars to ground connectors at San Jose, warmed the cars up until they were almost uncomfortable, and than let them cool all the way to San Francisco! This particular train is seen on the high speed curve shortly after sunrise at Hayward Park, just south of San Mateo, California.
