Snapshot History: Originally the Chicago & Alton Railroad Company of 1906, but under foreclosure operations since 1922, the line was sold to the Alton Railroad Company July 18, 1931 for $23,000,000. The main line and branches amounted to a little over 1,000 miles of railroad from Chicago to St.Louis and on to Kansas City, Missouri. On July 14, the ICC had granted the acquisition of sufficient Alton stock by the Baltimore & Ohio to have a controlling interest. The Alton remained independent, however, operating as a wholey owned subsidiary. On June 1, 1947 the Alton Railroad Company's stock, held by B&O, was purchased by, and the railroad merged into, the newly formed Gulf Mobile & Ohio. The GM&O included the former Mobile & Ohio. In 1971 the GM&O and the Illinois Central merged becoming the Illinois Central Gulf. In 1988 the ICG again became just the Illinois Central. In 1999 the Illinois Central became part of the Canadian National (America). Much of the old (Chicago &) Alton Railroad right-of-way is still in use.
