ALGOMA CENTRAL & HUDSON BAY RAILWAY
======================================
Snapshot History: The Algoma Central Railway Incoporated by Francis H. Clergue and Associates on August 11, 1899, and chartered by the Dominion, the ACR was to build from Michipicoten on Lake Superior north to Suilt Ste. Marie, Ontario and on to the Canadian Pacific. Also, branches were to be built out to steel mills and to the source of newly found ore. This included Wharf's and docks for freight and passenger transfer. Shortly afer the construction process began it became obvious that the Ontario, Hudson Bay & Western, a competeing line also in construction process, was in the way. Clergue purchased it and renamed the new company the Algoma Central & Hudson Bay Railway. Thus, The construction dream became a line from Lake Superior to Hudson Bay. By 1903 the branch lines had been built and the hauling of ore begun. The line was now 12 miles north of Lake Superior. Unfortunately, Clergue became over- extended and the incorporation fell apart. Now the problem of the Dominion, the railroad construction continued, though through to Hudson Bay was dropped. By 1914 the line had been extend north 56 miles. By 1916, the line reached Hearst, 296 miles from Suilt Ste. Marie. Construction haulted, never to go any further, and the Algoma Central Railway would operate over this line for the next 79 years. Except for full diesel replacement in 1952, the line remained basically unchanged. In 1995 the Company was purchased by the Wisconsin Central. In 2001 it became part of the Canadian National. Today it continues as a major freight carrier in Ontario and a connection to Lake Superior shipping. For the railfan and tourist its scenic passenger service into the raw interior is well appreciated. Associated historical note: "Sault Ste. Marie" translates to "Falls of St. Mary's:" There is a series of wild visually spectacular rapids here on the St. Lawrence River that drops 20 feet in a very short distance. For over 200 years trappers and fur traders had to walk their canoes and other floating watercrft around them. It is said the Indian of the day could navigate them.
