As a result, only now are many of them being printed and/or digitally documented for the very first time. Our available print lists represent only those negatives or JPEG files which have been printed with some success and do not represent the entire collection. To preview your selections email us what your interests are and we will go through our database and furnish you with a list(s) of those views we have successfully printed. From that list email us with what you would like to see and we will put up those images on our server. From there you may choose an item or items for purchase. Please realize that in some cases the list may be long and, since the JPEG files are large, we would use up all our server space just to show them. Please be selective. When selecting an image you will have to tell us what size (8" X 10" or 11" X 14") and in what format (full- frame negative to cropped image) you would like the print. There is no such thing as a standard print! VALUE OF A PRINT -- What makes a print unique and gives it "value" is that there is only one such original negative or view, in the case of a digital image, from which to make each print and only so much production time to process them. We are not selling rights to the print, nor are we selling it at any potential value of or by itself. What we are selling is our production and processing time and that we have the right to sell you that print. Remember, all of the prints we sell, whether based on negative or digital image began with the view the photographer saw. It is his or her captured scene of a moment in time. ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS -- When we sell a print, unless we specifically state otherwise, it is made from the original negative which captured the view. That does not mean the print was necessarily processed by the original photographer. Note -- Unlike color negatives, a black & white negative does not change much except if its surface is attacked by some external agent. Therefore, realistically, an original print is an original print, no matter when it was printed. DIGITAL IMAGES -- When we sell a print made from a digital image, that 250 - 375 dpi image was produced using a first generation print in all cases unless otherwise stated. PRINT SIZE -- Today's photographic industry generally uses two sizes of photographic paper for enlargements. They are the 8" X 10" and 11" X 14" formats. Most picture frames fit those formatted sizes. Unfortunately, many earlier negatives were of such cut size that to make a print full frame you needed 7" X 11" or 9 1/2" X 14" paper. Thus, many of those prints that we sell from older negatives are either cropped to fit existing paper formats or run full frame, but usually do not fit a standard picture frame. Likewise, JPEG files usually produce a print that is 11" wide and of varying height to fit a standard 8 1/2" X 11" machine format. As a result of the foregoing, we provide photographic prints and digital images in one common size - 8 1/2" X 11". In the case of larger prints and digital images, the photographic paper is of an 11" X 14" and the image paper is of an 11" X 17" size. OVERSIZED JPEG IMAGE -- In an effort to present the overall quality of a print we have chosen to run JPEG files on our server at 100 dpi full size, 7.25" wide. FINAL PRINT RECEIVED -- The print that you receive may not necessarily be the "exact" image you see on the screen. It will be close. As each print is made individually from the negative or the JPEG file as presented in the digital image, it may have slightly more or less print information at the edges. Reproducing the exact same view time after time is (for us anyway) not possible! No two prints are exactly the same. Sometimes there is more to a picture than the scanned image represents. Sometimes people want a picture enlarged from part of a negative or a portion of a JPEG file. Some want the negative or JPEG image cropped to fit a standard size, and some want the print made from an entire negative. Thus, each potential print is unique from the other. PRINT QUALITY -- For the most part, we are selling views which are 60 to 70 years old. We try to print to the level of quality the original negative or print will deliver. We can not, however, be responsible for spots, stains, streaks, or other irregularities in the media from which the views are processed. These are antiques with flaws in many cases. Some are works of art, some are just pictures and some are record shots of history. All prints from negatives are furnished on Kodak "E" semi- gloss surface Polycontrast III or Ilford Pearl finish Multigrade IV resin coated papers. Other papers such as linen based and archival types are available, but such prints are more expensive due to material cost, processing and increased handling time. Email for quote. PUBLIC BENEFIT AND PUBLICATIONS -- Yesteryear Depot has many items of a historical nature which we retain all rights and title to. We are, however, more than happy to work with non-profit museums, associations and historical societies organized for the public benefit. Also, we work directly with potential authors and researchers needing our materials. In those cases where history is being preserved or advanced our costs are only those of an incidential case in providing the items needed. * Regarding publication rights: We will offer individual rights for one time publications on an item by item basis at no service charge. Likewise, the same holds true for an individual book that may be reprinted several times. All that we ask, in the case of a view used, is a credit line like: By (photographer) - Yesteryear Depot Collection. * Retail Sales: We sell in bulk to profit and non-proft dealers and organization for resale purposes: Contact us for further information. ************************************************************ YESTERYEAR DEPOT INDEX to: PHOTOGRAPHIC & DIGITAL IMAGE DATABASE: Note -- Yesteryear Depot's photographic and image database has one or more views from each of the following rail operations: -------------------------------------------------------------- RAILROADS OF CALIFORNIA & THE WEST ================================== ALMANOR R.R.\COLLINS PINE Co (ACPC) AMADOR CENTRAL (AC) APACHE RAILWAY (ARWY) ARCATA & MAD RIVER (AMR) BINGHAM & GARFIELD RY (BIGA) BOCA & LOYALTON (BOCA) BOULDER CREEK & PESCADERO (BCP) CALIFORNIA & NEVADA RR (CNR) CALIFORNIA BELT LINE (CBL) CALIFORNIA FRUIT EXPRESS (CFE) CALIFORNIA WESTERN (CW) CASPAR, SOUTH FORK & EASTERN (CSFE) CENTRAL PACIFIC (CPR) COLORADO & SOUTHERN (CS) COLUMBIA & COWLITZ RWY (CC) DEEP CREEK RR (DC) DOLBEER & CARSON LUMBER CO. The Negative - Book 2 ===================== "I eagerly await new concepts and processes. I believe that the electronic image will be the next major advance. Such systems will have their own inherent and inescapable structural characteristics, and the artist and functional practitioner will again strive to comprehend and control them." Ansel Adams March, 1981 While to most of you Yesteryear Depot is simply a place to buy older photographs, we view it as something quite different. We are working from a large photographic collection which will eventually be part of a museum resource. We are in the process of cataloging and trying to preserve those images, and the available information about them, in the collection. We use the funds raised from sales in part to help support us so we can devote a major amount of time to the process. The Process: ============ Current expert archival thinking is to copy each print, with or without a negative, maximize the image as to tone, hue and contrast, and store the finished view on an 8-bit gray-scale file using the TIF format and JPEG algorithm. While the negative is what is really important, most experts now believe that a digital file will last the longest with the least degradation. Further, images can be made from that same file without disturbing the archived negative. Likewise, image repeatability is easily achieved from a digital file, while each darkroom print has the probability of being somewhat different. For some time we have been struggling with the foregoing in terms of wanting to produce good photography, but also working toward the future archival of prints and negatives. At the same time, we have hundreds of old, many smaller, original photographs with no negatives. Rather than make copy negatives of these older views, which produce pictures of slightly less quality than the original print, and which accomplishes nothing as to the archival process, we have decided to go straight to a digital file. Further, several of our negatives have problems as to being underexposed, improper density right to left, and surface spotting and degrading. By making the best print we can in the darkroom (usually not good enough to sell) and then enhancing it via computer program, we can arrive pretty close to what the photographer originally intended. There is the problem, however, of public acceptance. Many say a digital image is "not" a photograph. "When I buy a photograph, I want a photograph!" They, of course, are stuck in the past and with what is "valuable." In truth, the same print, if produced properly, whether digital image or photograph, is indistinguishable to the naked eye. The 8-bit JPEG algorithm allows for 256 variations in gray-scale luminesce between black and white. That is about 150 more variations than the human eye can normally detect. All of this leads us to the following conclusion: First, we will continue to produce and sell "photographic" views from quality negatives in our collection, especially the larger views. Second, we are also going to make available and sell "digital" prints which do not produce well from negatives, or cannot be produced, using the photographic process. This will make a whole new group of previously closeted views available to the interested public. Each print will be identified in our database, in the description field, as an "Image" or "Photo" and will be priced appropriately. This does not imply one format is better than another. It simply means the digital image is less labor intensive and the cost of the same print material (minus photographic emulsion layer) lower for the same view. Thus, we pass that savings along. In all cases the final picture will be produced from the original print or negative unless otherwise indicated. Regarding our digital prints: We are using Xerox software and scanning at a dpi rate sufficient to produce quality 8«" by 11" images. We produce the full frame as viewed with white border filling blank space. We do not produce the actual prints at this time, but have them done at a local computer center which uses a Xerox state-of-the-art digital system. Finally, you the buyer, of course, will determine what we ultimately sell. Keep in mind the view you are buying has value to you. There is something about it that strikes your perception of a certain reality. Whether a stunning artistic rendering, a quality view, a typical record shot, or a faded, spotted and stained rare scene, you derive satisfaction by its possession. Therefore, we will continue to strive to produce that print, digital or photographic, which has significance. Rick Hamman
